Masters Of Science
A masters of science degree is usually available to students who have already earned a bachelor's degree in a particular science field but wishes to continue their pursuit for higher education. It is available for both physical and social science; it, therefore, encompasses a wide range of courses but not as many as those in the bachelor's level. A masters degree is not just limited to science but can also be availed in arts.
Unlike in the bachelor's degree where most courses require that the student do a course-based and hands-on learning, a masters of science degree can be obtained through course-based learning only, hands-on or research learning only, or a combination of both. In fact, in masters courses, the students can focus entirely on research without having to attend classroom discussions. Although course requirements are generally stricter, the students have a more flexible learning schedule when the masters of science is based on research alone.
Obtaining a masters of science degree can be done online. There are a lot of schools, accredited by various education boards and schools, which can offer online masters programs in various courses. The students can easily find online colleges but they have to be careful that the college is really accredited by the education board of a particular course or the study will not be recognized.
Although a masters of science degree is usually available only to those with a bachelor's degree, some schools or courses, however, do offer a joint degree which is longer than the usual four years of bachelor's education. Masters programs are also prerequisites for most doctorate programs but can also be taken along with doctorate courses in some science courses or schools. That means that the students can obtain a doctorate degree immediately after finishing their bachelor's degree. However, this is not a common practice as most courses are still available only on a bachelor's, master's and doctorate sequence.
Most programs in masters of science involve about two years of study, the total number of units and subjects to be taken being dependent on what field the student has chosen. Of course, requirements and prerequisites are different across the courses available for masters of science but the students will all graduate with the distinction of being a postgraduate.
